Course description
This course is an introduction to creative writing through the production of several different genres of writings. This class is intended to help you
…begin to think of yourself as a writer, as well as a critic of writing.
…learn and write about topics that you are interested in.
…become more creative, imaginative, and reflective.
…develop your own individual voice.
…become more interested in literature.
…strengthen your writing skills.
A lot is expected of you in this course. High achievement is easily attainable if you work hard. With this in mind, we will be working hard in this class while still leaving room to explore many aspects of writing in a fun way.
Major writing assignments
Materials
Writing Logs- Most of our writing will be done on the iPads, but if you prefer, you may bring a notebook to keep your thoughts within.
Novel- a book of your choice that you would like to read daily. It must be a book; no magazines please.
Independent Reading: WEDNESDAY
We will begin class, on Wednesdays, by reading for a sustained 20-30 minutes. The book that you choose is totally up to you; one requirement that I have is that it must be a book. This is done to help you gain a joy for reading. Reading is important because it helps you to gain a better understanding of all of the aspects of writing (grammar, genre, human emotion, etc.). Points for this activity are based on participation and attentiveness. If you forget your book, sleep, or disrupt others in class you WILL lose points. You will receive 10 points per Wednesday, and these cannot be made up.
Our class as a community
People tend to be more successful when they are comfortable in the environment that they are working in. With this in mind, it is my hope that we can all become comfortable around one another. This can occur if
…we respect one another.
…we try to work together to obtain high achievement.
…we make an effort to get to know one another.
I do not expect everyone to become friends. I simply expect that everyone will try hard to form our class into a cohesive community.
Classroom rules
* Failure to comply with any of these rules will result in detention, parent calls and/or conferences, Saturday school, suspension, etc.
Tardies
You must be present IN class in order to be counted as present and on time.
