Writing for Publication, Course Description:
Students in this class are responsible for compiling the historical record of a school year. As part of that process, the class is involved in the writing process, the design process and the production of a final product. Each student is responsible for approximately six all-color pages of production. Individual opportunities are available for bookkeeping, sales managing, photography, and advertising campaigns. The class stresses the team approach, particularly in the selling and designing of the yearbook itself. Students are expected to be responsible and trustworthy. The product they produce is of great importance to the history of the school.
Writing for Publication is available to 9th - 12th grade students, but they must have the approval of the instructor before registering.
Classroom Expectations:
- Our classroom is a place of learning. Therefore, you should come to class with the proper items for learning, such as a writing utensil, paper, and any other items necessary. You will be required to work on a computer in this class, therefore it is expected that you will only be working on class material while on the computer.
- Our classroom is a safe environment. Each student deserves to feel safe expressing his or her thoughts and feelings in the context of our material and the learning process. Therefore, there will be no taunting, put downs, or unkind teasing tolerated.
- Our classroom is a place of respect. As a teacher I will treat each of you with respect. I expect that you will treat me, as well as each of your classmates, with the same respect. Our classroom is a part of the larger Brown City High School community. Therefore, we will not do anything in our classroom that would be a distraction to the ability of other students to learn and other teachers to teach. We will also treat the building, the classroom materials, and the other individuals in the building with respect.
o Please observe the expectations of Brown City High School as delineated in your student handbook.
o No food or drinks allowed in the classroom, except bottled water.
Classroom Procedures:
Extra Help:
I will be available before and after school on an appointment basis. I am always willing to come in and offer extra help for any student requesting assistance.
Absences:
The school attendance policy sets the standard for attendance in this class. You will be required to meet various deadlines throughout this course. If you are unable to attend class, you are still required to meet those deadlines.
Tardiness:
You are tardy if you are not in the classroom at the completion of the tardy bell. In the event that you are tardy, you will be asked to get a tardy pass from the Assistant Principal’s Office. We will follow the Brown City High School tardy policy.
Dismissal:
The bell does not dismiss you at the end of class. I will dismiss you. You must be in your assigned seats until I dismiss you.
Cell Phones/Mobile Devices:
Cell phones/mobile devices are not to be used during class unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. In the event that you use your device at an unauthorized time, we will follow the Brown City High School policy.
Syllabus
This is an elective class designed to get you ready for your life after Brown City. You should not be surprised when you’re working hard in this class and being asked to do things that you have never done in school before. This is not designed to be a FUN class, but if you work hard and master the skills I am introducing to you, I believe you will find a great deal of satisfaction in what you are able to accomplish.
Major Components of Writing for Publication:
- Design of color yearbook pages
- Gathering data and information for pages
- Taking photographs for pages assigned
- Selling advertisements
- Completing weekly writing assignments
- Meeting deadlines
- Constructing weekly newsletter for staff and students
You will be completing a portion of a 100-page all-color yearbook. Each student will be assigned approximately 6 pages and will be working with one other student on each page they are assigned. You are responsible for getting pictures for each of your pages! If you cannot attend an event, you may ask someone else to take pictures for you, but if they fail to follow through for you, you are still responsible for getting those pictures. Failure to obtain pictures will result in an automatic one-letter grade deduction. (That includes having to ask teachers and parents for pictures after the event has passed.) It is important to get as many pictures as possible, as the goal of the yearbook is to cover as many faces as possible.
Failure to meet a deadline for yearbook pages will also result in a minimum of one-letter grade deduction. (If seniors fail to complete pages, your report card will be held until those pages are completed and you will receive a one-letter grade deduction or the appropriate grade to reflect the amount of work completed on your page(s)).
Every staff member is responsible for selling two ads the first semester (at least one each marking period). You may call or go to the actual business, but it is your responsibility. There will be a list of several businesses, but you are welcome to sell to whomever you see fit for Brown City's yearbook. Failure to complete this assignment will result in a one-letter grade deduction. You are also responsible for designing that ad and placing it on an ad page at the back of the yearbook. All ads must be designed by the end of the first semester. These ads are the most important because this is how we pay for our yearbooks.
In addition to creating the yearbook, there will be several other assignments to complete in the class as well. Students will be creating a school wide newspaper that will come out biweekly. There will be editors per section that will oversee the articles, correcting the necessary pieces for publication. These articles will then be compiled into a S'more Flyer and made public by posting on my website.
Each article is due at the beginning of the hour on the Monday of publishing week in Showbie. This article will be a well-composed piece of composition. It is expected that students take their time to write this, and will be of high quality. I am not expecting several pages to be written, but there are some articles that will entail more detail. Each article should be at least a solid paragraph; minimum 250 words.
Failure to turn in an article will directly effect students grades. If an article is not turned in by Monday at 8:15 am (of publishing week), students will receive an automatic zero. Any article that is deemed late, will receive an automatic 30% grade deduction. Students may redo/complete missing work, but it will not be eligible for more than a 70%.
Along with the article, reporters are required to provide at least 5 quality pictures that relate to their article. These images will be reviewed and selected by the section editor. These most be posted to the appropriate file on the N drive. Any images not posted by Monday at 8:15 am will be considered late. You will receive 2 points per image for a total of 10 points.
Monday-Wednesday will be the editors' time to review and correct any necessary items in the article. If these articles are not reviewed well, and still have several errors, you will lose points. As an editor, it is your job to evaluate the writing of your peers. Any S'more not completed by the appropriate date will be marked late/missing and your grade will be directly effected.
To submit these newsletter articles, there will be posting on Showbie as a Google Doc or in Word. They must be able to be edited. Pictures will be posted to the N Drive. All yearbook students have access to this drive, and it should only be used for yearbook purposes. You will submit your work accordingly per week.
*Photos on the N drive that are provided by professional photographers are not for you to take. This is an indisputable rule- do not break it. Please respect the photographers wishes.
**You must also complete a daily participation log. Every day you must write what you worked on for that day. If you were absent, simply put ABSENT. This will be graded every week. These will be worth 5 points per week. Any day that you were not involved in yearbook production, you will lose a point per day.
Grading Policy
The following chart is the Grading Scale for this class.

Students must also have an overall average grade that is passing using the formula: each marking period is worth 40% and the exam is worth 20% of the semester grade.
*Please make every attempt to inquire about grades before or after class time. Student grades are periodically updated on Skyward, our BCHS On-line Grading System. There are links to this system through our website.
Concluding Thoughts:
I anticipate that we will have a full and rewarding semester of learning together. I look forward to working with each of you. Each of you will contribute your unique qualities to our classroom community and we will all grow as a result of one another.
I have read and understand the rules and mechanics of this class.
